Music Makes a Difference

I am having a particularly meh or mergh day.  One of those days that nothing seems to go right and there is frustration all round and it’s not only mine.  We all know those.  When you feel like the day should just have been cancelled and you feel like going to hide or running off to the beach for the day (summer has arrived in Cape Town).  Turning off your phone and not opening your inbox would be a bonus.  All would be safer options for all concerned.

Unfortunately adulting does not always afford us the opportunity to do those things.  So here are my suggestions.  Each one I suggest with confidence because I know they work.

So today I turned to music.  Incredible what listening to music can do.  It instantly changes the mood.  See point 9 below.  And I admit I do find solace in that song.

  1. Breathe.
  2. Step away from the “baby” i.e. your computer, inbox, phone, instant messenger, correspondence.
  3. Journal.  Write out your frustration.
  4. Phone a friend who can hear you.  He or she doesn’t need to say much, they can just listen.
  5. Have a coaching session.  A coach will help you get to the route of your frustration and allow you to gain the perspective that has been lost.
  6. Plan something fun for the weekend.
  7. Turn on some music.  Listen to uplifting tunes.
  8. Spend time with children, your own or someone else’s.
  9. Let it all go.  Disney movie soundtracks are great for this.
  10. Come back tomorrow and try again.

You’re so right! Music does help give me that zip that I need to enjoy tasks more. My problem is that, if I choose all my favorite songs, then sometimes I get distracted with the singing and dancing along. That’s why I still use our old iPod that has 7,000 songs (from a variety of genres). I put it on shuffle and let it rip when I just need background music. Thanks for sharing.
