This somewhat over used cliche seems apt for this week “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” This week I have learned about determination, dedication and discipline.
By determination I am referring to the will and the drive to succeed. By dedication I am referring to the commitment to succeed. And by discipline I am referring to the practice or practices which make us succeed. With these three things, anything is possible. I particularly find these character traits relevant for women going through a professional or personal transition.
As women life throws many things at us. We often find ourselves juggling careers, wife-dom and motherhood and we can feel under pressure to succeed at all three. I do believe at times there is a need to re-look or re-think our definitions of success as this will change over time.
When we set out to establish our careers, salary and status are of paramount importance. If we are to follow the traditional rites of passage, once married we are expected to be the perfect wife; available to our men. We can and often do set ourselves up to be more successful than our men. But by whose definition? Think about it; when a woman marries what is her role and how does she ensure balance? How she, her husband and society see her and her success differs. Perhaps a more appropriate question to ask of yourself is, “How can I ensure I feel successful in both my work and home life?”. If we choose to focus on that we are able to circumvent any confusion as to what success means to us.
Any transition in life can be equally stressful, painful, invigorating and empowering. It really boils down to how we choose to manage the particular transition. I believe in women supporting women and for that reason I coach and support women through transitions in their professional and personal live. Reach out for a free discovery call today.
