Mentor vs. Coach

Many are confused about the difference between mentoring and coaching.

Coaching involves partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and co-creative process that inspires you to maximise your personal and professional potential while mentoring is about receiving trusted advice, at a skills and knowledge level, from someone who has the experience and wisdom in the field that you have not yet attained.

When seeking advice go to a mentor and draw on their experience.  Expect to receive information that you will more than likely act upon in the short-term.  You can expect your mentor to be doing most of the work.  You’ll ask most of the questions and they will share accordingly.

When engaging with a coach expect a much deeper developmental experience which will sustain well beyond your relationship with your coach coming to its natural end.  You will leave that experience having worked hard on yourself, guided by the coach through a process.
