Mental Health in the Workplace

World Mental Health Day took place on 10th October, and this year’s theme was Mental Health in the Workplace.  A negative working environment can lead to physical and mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, absenteeism, lost productivity, and even substance abuse.  According to The World Health Organisation more than 300 million people suffer from depression globally.

Here are some mental health tips

  • Talk about your feelings: it is not good to keep feelings bottled up inside.
  • Keep active: exercise is good for maintaining both physical and mental health.
  • Eat healthy: our brain needs a good mix of nutrients to function effectively.
  • Take a break: we all need a break every now and again, whether it is a ten minute break at work or taking a long weekend if you can’t manage a holiday.
  • Do activities you are good at and enjoy: this helps boost self-esteem and beats stress.
  • Surround yourself with good positive people: it is important to have people close to us who are positive and can support us.
  • Start a new hobby: this helps to increase brain activity, boosts self-esteem and expands your social network.
  • Seek help: if there is something you are struggling with, you can always seek help from a professional.
